Plum Granny Farm Weekly Update for April 6, 2018 -- Opening Day!

Posted 4/8/2018 1:58pm by Cheryl.

Hello Farm Friends!  Happy Friday!  Welcome April!
Signs of Spring are everywhere!  The goldfinches are putting on their bright yellow plumage and the dogwood trees are starting to flower.

Lots going on here at the farm this week!  Now that the fields have finally dried a bit, the primary activity is to get the fields ready for planting and get those plants in the ground!  Getting things planted is actually the easiest part of the process.  It seems like 30% of the time is getting the beds prepped, fertilized and shaped.  And about 30% of the time is getting irrigation in place.  Another 30% is getting the deer field installed!  So only about 10% of the time is actually planting!  Probably an exaggeration, but it sure feels like it sometimes!  Take a look at what we've been up to!

And if you are a deer, you had better NOT enter this zone!

So we have gotten LOTS of snap and snow peas planted along with Fava Beans (fingers crossed, folks!), lettuce, frisse, beets, collards and more.  Starting to feel like a real farm around here!

Cobblestone Farmers Market Starts This Weekend!

And now for the moment that many of you have been waiting for... Opening Day at the Cobblestone Farmers Market in Old Salem is Saturday (4/7) from 9-noon!   The market is located adjacent to the Single Brothers Garden at the intersection of Salt and West Streets in Old Salem.  For the latest updates on the market, check out Cobblestone's Facebook page.

We'll be back in our usual spot (near the intersection of West Street and Old Salem Road).  Our purple tent will be packed with lots of Certified Organic goodness including Purple and Green Asparagus, Kale (Lacinato/Dino and Red Russian), Snacking Cucumbers, Pea Shoots, Sunflower Shoots, Microgreens, Winter Squash, fresh Turmeric, Baby Ginger (vacuum-packed and frozen), Fire-Roasted Green Chile (vacuum-packed and frozen).  It's also time to stock up on Garlic Powder and Granules, along with Ginger and Turmeric Powder!  And don't forget our delectable jams.

We wanted to update you on a new initiative of the market management:  the REUSE RECYCLE BIODEGRADE INITIATIVE to do our part to reduce the amount of single-use plastic at the market.  To that end, we will not longer be able to provide plastic bags for produce.  So if you want plastic bags, please bring your own.  We will have paper bags available for packing your purchases and encourage you to bring your own shopping bags.  We understand that this will take some adjustment on all of our parts but we can work together to make the planet healthier!

We hope to see you there on Saturday -- pull on your galoshes and rain jacket and come on down to Old Salem!  We've missed seeing you over the winter -- please stop by and say "hello!"

That wraps up this week's news.  In closing, we'll share a few photos from a patch of land that has LOTS going on:  the Strawberry Field!  They are coming soon although we have had a bit of freeze damage on some of the flowers.  Chris, our resident Strawberry Lover, got to taste the first one of the season -- he gave it a thumbs up!  And yes, we have to cover them once again....

Until next week,
Cheryl & Ray
