Plum Granny Farm Weekly Update for March 1, 2019 -- March Forth!

Posted 3/2/2019 8:42am by Cheryl.

Hello Farm Friends!  Happy Friday!  Happy March!
Did you hear it?
Yep, I distinctly heard the sound of another month zipping past!

March is here.  No denying that.  For those of you who have been reading these newsletters for a while, you know that we have a special name for March around here:  Command Month.  More than any month of the year, March tells us what to do.  It's the Drill Sargent of the calendar.

So in preparation for this bossy month, we've been busy this week!

Getting the strawberries cleaned up was a high priority.  We needed to clear away the old dead leaves to give the plants a chance to breathe!  Jonny and Tesla did a terrific job at making that happen!  Won't be long before flowers will start popping up on the plants.

The drier weather was definitely a Godsend after last week's deluge.  We got over 7 inches of rain -- nearly 3 on Friday and Saturday alone.

Things will be going into the field soon (at least in the places that are dry enough to plant).  We'll be planting the snap peas and squash (!) in Raz House early next week and the collards, bunching onions and kale are waiting for the next cold spell to pass next week.  They have been hanging outside the greenhouse getting used to the real world.

Other signs of Spring abound....sheep moving to a new grazing area (didn't work, they got lonely and kept escaping), stirring up the fish emulsion for our big farmer co-op fertilizer order (kinda had a messy situation on our hands here!), Mia napping in the sunshine (she got the message from Yam that you need to look like you are dead when you sleep in the pasture) and the ginger has arrived!

Come Meet Your Farmer!

Today Farmer Cheryl will be at the Meet Your Farmer Day sponsored by Forsyth County Extension.  The event will be in the atrium at the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter (575 North Patterson Avenue) from 11-1:30.  If you work in the area, I'd love for you to stop by and hear about the great stuff we have planned on the farm this season!

Get Fresh -- PlumFresh -- With Us!
We have had a great response to our initial offering of this year's subscriptions for  PlumFresh,  our Harvest Subscription Program!   We are filling up FAST!  In fact, our Cobblestone Market pick-ups only have a very few slots remaining but we do have openings for our Wednesday on-farm pick-ups and Wednesday delivery option (for just $4 you can have your bag of farm-fresh, Organic goodies dropped off at your DOOR -- either at home or at work!).

Here's what one of our members had to say about last year's program:

"The quality and freshness were unbeatable...[it] made us feel like we were tasting some of the fruits/veggies for the first time."

More information is available on our website and a registration form can be found here.

Nesting Box Workshop -- Sunday March 17
The bluebirds are out and are looking for places to nest!  Be prepared and register for our upcoming Bluebird Nesting Box Workshop. The workshop is on Sunday, March 17 from 2-5We have been able to REDUCE the price by finding a better deal on materials -- it is now $25 per person!  Come build your own bluebird nesting box and learn about these beautiful and useful creatures!   In addition to bluebird houses, we'll also talk about native bees and have Orchard Mason Bee Houses available for purchase.  To register, please click here and complete the form.

That does it for this week's edition!  Before we March off to do our tasks, let's give you a moment to enjoy the beauty of the daffodils -- these are bulbs that Cheryl's mom planted many years ago.  They always bring us a big smile as we remember her -- what beautiful legacy.

Until next week,

Cheryl & Ray
