Plum Granny Farm Weekly Update -- Halloween Edition 🎃

Posted 10/27/2019 1:46pm by Cheryl.

Hello Farm Friends!  Happy Friday!
Oh, the frightful things of Halloween.  How about scary cats?

No?  How about this...

Didn't think so...

Better?

How about this?

As you can see, we really don't go too much into the huge inflatables and massive Halloween decorations.  We're a bit more subtle and into enjoying the beauty of Fall.  But trust us, there's plenty of scary stuff lurking around.  There's a very active platoon of spiders that work overtime from summer to fall to decorate the boxwoods and the front porch.  Have you ever seen spider eyes at night?  Scary!

We'll let our natural creatures take care of the décor and we'll probably buy a bag of candy in case we have a trick-or-treater!  It's about time to have one!

Oh Deer!
Our resident deer population seems to be increasing and they are pretty hungry -- the heat and drought of the summer eliminated a lot of their food sources.  We've heard from other farmers that deer have become more brazen -- even going into greenhouses and covered high tunnels!  While we haven't had that level of damage, they are hopping over our fence and even strolling into our uncovered tunnel to munch on beans and peas.

We decided to get more aggressive with blocking their path.  We added lots more twine to block their access -- and a van and ladder for good measure.

It seems to have done the trick -- at least for now!

Strawberry Fields...Still Continued!
A moment of extreme optimism must have gripped me when writing last week's newsletter.  We just finished covering the beds in the strawberry fields yesterday and hope to get the all important deer fence up today.  And finally THEN we can plant next week.  It takes a lot of landscape fabric and sod staples to cover a quarter-acre (and it sure feels like more than that!)!  Since we grow strawberries as a multi-year crop (the last ones were in for five years), this isn't an annual chore (thank goodness!)

Quick Field Walk

The garlic planted at our workshop two weeks ago has already started popping out of the ground!  The warmer temperatures and rain have really helped wake up the cloves!

Our sweet potato crates are finished and are in use!  This will be a great way to store them through the season.

Cobblestone Farmers Market Update
The weather forecast for Saturday is looking pretty good -- a cloudy but mild day -- perfect for strolling through the market!  As the temperatures start to drop and the days get shorter, we really start to crave warm and comforting flavors.  We've got what you need!

Last week's soup sample was a big hit so we'll be doing it again with another sweet potato soup -- Sweet Potato-Lentil Stew.  YUM!  This delicious soup features two of our current offerings -- delicious Sweet Potatoes and Baby Ginger!

In addition to these, you'll find

  • Peppers Galore!  Chile, Hot Peppers, Mild Peppers, Sweet Peppers (Lunchbox and Jimmy Nardello)
  • Roasted Green Chile, Roasted Poblanos and Roasted Aji Dulce
  • Beautiful Heirloom Eggplant
  • Daikon Radishes
  • Pea Shoots
  • Green beans (the crop is slowing!)
  • A little bit of garlic
  • And lots more!

As usual, if you'd like us to hold an item for you, please email no later than 7:00 p.m. Friday night and we'll have it waiting for you.

That does it for this week's news! Tomorrow is a B-I-G day at the farm -- Mia's Birthday!

Yep, our little baby turns ONE tomorrow.  Hard to believe but she's almost as big as her mom now.  Cara did good!

Have a great week!
